Screen printing

Screen printing is probably the most common technology in the manufacture of the promotional products. Many types of products are made using it, from printing to souvenirs. The beginning of the application of this technology is ascribed almost to the ancient China, and modern development can begin from 1907, when the silk-screen printing patent was received.

Why is this technology called screen printing or silk screen printing? Because according to the printing method, ink passes through the stencil. That is, if you make a stencil and paint a wall through it, this is also a screen print. But the one that will be discussed below is the silk-screen printing. Initially, silk was used for the manufacture of screen printing nets, then more modern synthetic or metallic threads were used. Therefore, we call it silk-screen printing.

Screen printing process.

It consists of preparatory work, printing and drying itself. Preparatory work is the creation of a printing form, that is, an exposed frame with a grid, where the future drawing is printed, which will be then printed on the product. Next, the printing process using printing equipment, special inks, frames and squeegees. At the end of the production, the goods are dried either on the conventional dryers or the UV dryers, if the paint had a UV hardener.

Frames or printing forms for the screen printing.

First, the transparency of the future image is printed on the special photosensitive film. Then a frame with a mesh is taken, which is smeared in 1-3 layers with a special copying solution. The thicker the layer, the thicker the print. Next, the frame is placed in the special equipment for drying the solution on the grid. Then, together with the film on which the transparency of the future print is placed in the equipment for exposure, where the frame is illuminated. In it, places where there was something on the transparency film are dubbed and then easily washed with water, forming gaps on a continuous layer of the grid. The print form is now ready but each form corresponds to a single print color. If you have 4-color printing, you need to make 4 forms, we will repeat all the processes of their manufacture.

Printing process.

Printing is done by installing the frame on the printing equipment. There is a table on the equipment where you can pull T-shirts or put a paper bag. Next, the frame with the printing form is pressed close to the product, paint is poured on the outside of the frame and squeezed by a squeegee. Through the grid, the paint passes only in white spaces where the grid is not covered by the exposed solution. If printing occurs in several colors, the printed product is rotated opposite to another frame where another printing form with the different ink is inserted and the next ink is applied. If the colors in the print layout are next to each other, then you need to dry the product in a dryer. Dryings are intermediate or final. The intermediate ones speed up the drying process so that the next color can be printed onto the product. And the final drying is needed to finally dry the ink after printing.

Equipment for the screen printing.

The equipment for two types of printing, for the textile one and for the graphic one, are distinguished. For the textile printing the carousel-type machines are used. They can be semi-automatic and automatic. The operator turns some, he also puts and squeezes the paint with the squeegee. The second one works almost completely automatically, you only need to install and change the product on which you are printing.

For the graphic printing the other equipment is used. Which can be divided into flat-flat, when printing occurs with a flat printing form on the flat surface of the product, for example, polygraphy. Flat-round, this is when a flat plate prints on a round product, such as a cup. And round-round, this is when a round object prints a round shape, through a rotating cylinder. The printing process and the drying process are similar for both types of equipment.

Inks for the screen printing.

The special inks for the silk-screen printing are used, they must pass through the grid without drying on it, and form a flat die and dry after contact with the product. For printing on textiles, designer cardboards, glass, leather or ceramics, paints of different compositions are used. In addition to the standard paints, there are some special ones: gold, silver, glitter and fluorescent, and you can also use various varnishes (glossy, matte, hybrid). The screen printing allows you to adjust the thickness of the ink, it ranges from 10 to 1000 microns. The chemical composition of the printing inks is very diverse, with a large number of modifiers, depending on the materials on which they will be printed.

Advantages:

  • Low cost for medium and large circulation;
  • Ability to print on any background color;
  • Ability to use various effects that cannot be obtained by other printing technology;
  • Ability to adjust the thickness of the paint on the product;
  • It is possible to print on any materials.

Disadvantages:

  • The high cost of small runs, due to the preparatory work;
  • You cannot print a full-color image (raster), only by color (vector);
  • You can not do urgent printing because of the preparation of films and printing forms.

Screen printing or silk screen printing is the most common technology for printing souvenir products. With it, they make VIP printing, with many effects and the use of the color design cardboards. It can be printed on almost any material, if you know how to make the right ink for such printing. If you need screen printing on any product, please contact our managers, they will be happy to help you.
