Digital printing is a printing technology in the printing industry which is performed in small print runs. In printing, the digital or the offset printing is used, they occupy more than 90% of the printing work. There is still flexography but let's talk about it later on separately.
Digital printing is a collective concept, generally accepted, but technically correct to call it contactless printing. Its peculiarity is that the layout is printed directly from the computer onto the paper. This is also not always the case, if you go deeper, it turns out that some types of digital machines first transfer the file to the receptor, after which the receptor applies the toner to the paper. But unlike the offset printing technology, the creation of forms for the digital printing occurs automatically and also automatically and quickly changes without people’s intervention.
The real names of the printing technologies which are combined into the digital printing, can be divided into two groups. Contactless are continuous inkjet and intermittent inkjet printing. As well as conditionally contact technologies: magnetography, elecography, electrography, electrophotography, ionography and OCE DI. In order not to bother with the features of each of the technologies, it is convenient to combine them into two types of the digital printing which are inkjet and laser.
Features of the digital printing and how it differs from the offset one. The first feature is the almost identical price of each printed sheet, whereas in the offset printing, the more - the cheaper. The second feature is the restriction in the size of the printed sheet, as a rule, it is an A3 sheet but there can also be cars and B3, maybe there is A1, but not everywhere. The third feature is the ability to print each sheet with the variable data. The fourth feature is the fast printing speed of different layouts, without any prior preparation. Thus, in general, the digital printing is suitable for the rapid printing of the small runs of up to 500 pieces.
The digital printing equipment is difficult to classify because there are many manufacturers and models. You can divide them into conditionally the office-home printers and professional equipment for the printers. According to the principle of operation, they are divided into inkjet and laser. The dimensions of all machines are small compared to the offset ones and allow you to install them in the small rooms. They also do not have high power consumption, usually a normal household power supply is enough for their work.
The digital printing advantages:
- Ability to make a probe before starting the run;
- Operational printing of various layouts, without preparation;
- Low cost in small runs;
- Personification, any variable data;
- It is possible to print on both sides on the same machine, high speed;
- It is easy and quick to print a small print run.
Disadvantages of the digital printing:
- It is inferior to the print quality of the offset technology but not dramatically;
- The durability of the paint is lower than on the offset one;
- Do not use gold, silver paint or the Panton colors;
- High cost for runs of 1000 pieces or more.
Digital printing is most often used for: business cards, flyers, booklets, posters, certificates, diplomas, leaflets, notebooks, calendars, catalogs, invitations, menus, labels, cards and many other products.
This is the basic information about the digital printing technology, although there are still many subtleties and features that are quite boring and not interesting. If you want to order the digital printing, you can contact our managers, because we, as a rule, better than customers understand what equipment is more profitable to print.
